The government feed-in tariff is a solar subsidy program that has been around for over 20 years. The principle is simple: you feed surplus electricity into the public grid and get paid for it. The rate is fixed for 20 years from the moment your PV system goes into operation. The problem is that the feed-in tariff is very low—currently under 8 cents/kWh. So, even if you feed in a lot of electricity, you can only earn a few hundred euros a year at most with the government tariff.
A major change is also coming in 2027: with the EEG reform, the government feed-in tariff for new systems will be replaced by a temporary transition scheme that pays about 1 cent less per kWh. By installing now, you lock in the current rates for 20 years.
As of March 1, 2025, the Solar Peak Act reduces this amount even further for households without a smart meter. Only 60% of maximum solar output can be fed into the grid (active power limitation), and you no longer receive payment for electricity fed in when market prices are negative. This can result in a loss of up to 30% of your revenue.
Whenever possible, Wattly installs a smart meter for our customers. This means you aren't affected by government-mandated active power limits. The key difference: Wattly markets the electricity you produce directly on the power exchange instead of simply feeding it into the grid for a fixed feed-in tariff. This means electricity is fed into the grid exactly when it's needed, allowing you to earn up to €1,000 in Wattly compensation per year.
